Ed May sent a link to this video (16 minutes) by Max Tegmark with the comment: "As far as I am concerned--game over with regard to consciousness in the brain". www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzCvlFRISIM(my comment on it:) Tegmark speculates that consciousness is an "emergent phenomenon". It is the patterns that determine whether a collection of quarks and other particles, or molecules, or food is conscious or not. He further speculates that consciousness has a certain "independence" from the "substrate" (the physical basis). Seems to me the word "independence" opens the gateway beyond a 'purely materialist' explanation (which is what I am pretty sure Ed May favors). What is the meaning of this "independence"? What does it consist of, what realms does it operate within?

Hi Jon,
This was very interesting.
I took this to mean (in layman's terms) is that consciousness is only tangible as it responds to some external/internal stimuli?
Thanks for sharing 2HB
